PROGRAMME: Fourth pre-production (but definitive) aircraft registered N101MG in February 1997. Company moved to Alaska in 2003 to start production and develop new variants.
CURRENT VERSIONS: Mountain Goat: Standard version, as described.
Mountain Goat UAV: Proposed UAV version. Major advantages stated to be all-weather operations and ability to use rougher terrain for take-off and landing; quiet technology propeller and exhaust systems.
CUSTOMERS: Orders being taken; first completed kit is N93GW, built by Goat Works Inc and registered in September 2001. Company intends construction of 50 aircraft in first full year of production, rising to 500 per year in fifth. Two titanium-framed aircraft under construction late 2003.
COSTS: US$145,000, equipped (2003), US$160,000 with titanium frame.
DESIGN FEATURES: Similar in appearance to Piper PA-18 Super Cub, but with 10 cm (4 in) wider fuselage. High, single strut-braced wings; empennage strut-braced. Sweptback fin. Heavy-duty construction and refined aerodynamics for inhospitable terrain.
FLYING CONTROLS: Conventional and manual. Actuation bellcrank and pushrod. Fowler flaps and flaperons both reflex up for faster cruise speeds. Horn-balanced rudder and elevators; flight-adjustable trim tab on port elevator; ground-adjustable tab on rudder.
STRUCTURE: Fuselage and empennage of fabric-covered 4130 steel tube. All-metal flush riveted high wing has single bracing struts and flush riveted flaps and flaperons. Strut-braced tailplane. Optional titanium 3-2.5 and 6-4 replacing steel.
LANDING GEAR: Tailwheel type; fixed. Bungee cord or spring steel suspension. Mainwheels have Goodyear 26x10.5-6 tyres (tyres in the range 6.00-6 to 31-6 can be fitted) and toe-operated dual hydraulic caliper brakes; dual-piston brakes optional. Scott 3200 steerable tailwheel with heavy-duty tail spring. Float and ski mountings optional.
POWER PLANT: One 134 kW (180 hp) Textron Lycoming IO-360-B2E flat-four driving a McCauley 76-66 two-blade, ground-adjustable pitch propeller; Hartzell and MT propellers can optionally be fitted. Fuel capacity 250 litres (66.0 US gallons; 55.0 imp gallons) of which 235 litres (62.0 US gallons; 51.6 imp gallons) usable.
ACCOMMODATION: Two seats in tandem with optional jump seat. One-piece full Plexiglas door on each side of fuselage. Dual controls. Four-point seat belts. Baggage space behind rear seat.
SYSTEMS: Skytec lightweight starter; B&C 40 A alternator; electric auxiliary fuel pump.
AVIONICS: Comms: moving map GPS/COM, Mode C transponder. Vision Microsystems engine management system.
EQUIPMENT: Wingtip strobe lighting; navigation lights, landing light and anti-collision beacon.
