Engine company adjacent to Short Brothers at Rochester in 1934 commissioned Harold Boultbee (from failed Civilian Aircraft) to design aircraft to use single Niagara engine, resulting Pobjoy Pirate (3 March 1935) extensively flown by Short test pilot Lankester Parker and used as company hack. Pobjoy reorganized May 1935 as Pobjoy Airmotors & Aircraft Ltd, exclusive licence to build Short Scion light transport, building 7; did not take up licence to build Scion Senior.
