The Gnatsum is a precise scale replica, for amateur construction, of the North American P-51D Mustang single-seat fighter of the Second World War. Its name ‘Gnatsum’ is ‘Mustang’ reversed. Drawings for two versions are available, the two-thirds scale MJ-7 and three-quarters scale MJ-77, the latter offering seating for two crew of up to 80 kg (176 lb) each. A reinforced model has a gross weight of 1,500 kg (3,307 lb). Engine options include a 313 kW (420 hp) supercharged Gipsy or 388-410 kW (520-550 hp) inverted Ranger. Specification details, and an illustration, can be found in the 1988-89 Jane's. Three are under construction in France, and one has flown in the USA with a 410 kW (550 hp) Double Ranger V12 engine (built by Ken Bard of Elmhurst, Wheeling, Illinois).
