The MJ-5 Sirocco is a tandem two-seat development of the MJ-2 TempĂȘte. It is fully aerobatic when flown as a two-seater. The prototype MJ-5 flew for the first time on 3 August 1962, powered by a 78.5 kW (105 hp) Potez 4 E-20 engine. A factory built model was awarded subsequently a certificate of airworthiness in the Utility category.
The version of the Sirocco for amateur construction is generally similar to the factory built version, with non-retractable or retractable landing gear, including optional retractable tailwheel. The type of engine fitted to a particular aircraft is indicated by a suffix letter in its designation. Suffix letters are A for the 67 kW (90 hp) Teledyne Continental C90-8 or - 14F; B for the 74.5 kW (100 hp) Teledyne Continental O-200-A; C for the 78.5 kW (105 hp) Potez 4 E-20; D for the 86 kW (115 hp) Potez 4 E-30; E for the 78.5 kW (105 hp) Hirth; F for the 93 kW (125 hp) Textron Lycoming; G for the 100.5 kW (135 hp) Regnier; H for the 119.5 kW (160 hp) Textron Lycoming; K for the 134 kW (180 hp) Textron Lycoming and L for the 149 kW (200 hp) Textron Lycoming. Addition of the numeral 1 indicates a non-retractable landing gear; the numeral 2 indicates a retractable main landing gear; 2A indicates that the tailwheel also retracts.
One aircraft has a 119 kW (160 hp) PRV modified motorcar engine and P-51 Mustang type underfuselage airscoop.
The details which follow refer to a Sirocco with an 86 kW (115 hp) Textron Lycoming O-235-C2B engine and 1.85 m (6 ft 0¾ in) diameter propeller, and a modified rudder of reduced height and greater chord.
