The prototype MJ-2 Tempête was flown for the first time on 27 June 1956. At least 45 Tempêtes are now flying.
The type of engine fitted to a particular aircraft is indicated by a suffix letter in its designation. Suffix letters are A for the 48.5 kW (65 hp) Teledyne Continental A65; B for the 56 kW (73 hp) Teledyne Continental A75; C for the 63.5 kW (85 hp) Teledyne Continental C85; D for the 67 kW (90 hp) Teledyne Continental C90-8/C90-14F; E for the 74.5 kW (100 hp) Teledyne Continental O-200-A; F for the 78.5 kW (105 hp) Potez 4 E-20; G for the 86 kW (115 hp) Potez 4 E-30; H for the 78.5-86 kW (105-115 hp) Textron Lycoming O-235; I for the 93 kW (125 hp) Textron Lycoming O-290-G; K for the 101-104 kW (135-140 hp) Textron Lycoming O-290-D2; N for the 112 kW (150 hp) Textron Lycoming or Teledyne Continental; P for the 119 kW (160 hp) Textron Lycoming or Teledyne Continental; R for the 134 kW (180 hp) Textron Lycoming or Teledyne Continental. The standard version is the MJ-2A. The MJ-2D cruises at 105 knots (195 km/h; 121 mph) and climbs to 1,000 m (3,280 ft) in 3 minutes. It can also perform aerobatics without loss of height.
A version known as the MJ-22 has a 112 kW (150 hp) engine and strengthened airframe.
The Tempête is basically a single-seat aircraft, but the 112 and 134 kW (150 and 180 hp) versions have provision for carrying behind the pilot on cross-country flights a second person weighing not more than 55 kg (121 lb). This is not permitted by the DGAC in France. The suffix 'A' is added to the aircraft designation in two-seat configuration.
The following details apply generally to all basic single-seat MJ-2 models.
