Brothers Reimar and Walter Horten formed Horten Gebrüder 1930 to produce gliders and competition sailplanes of tailless layout. First powered machine was Ho V (December 1942), followed by Ho VI, Ho VII produced in small numbers as Luftwaffe trainer and 60-passenger Ho VIII (never completed). Most ambitious was Ho IX fighter, powered by 2 Jumo 004B turbojets. Designed by Horten at Bonn, construction was assigned to Gotha at Friedrichsroda as Go 229. Flown as glider, first powered prototype nearly complete when captured.
